Lofoten Viking Experience
Segment: Lofoten Viking Experience
Episode: Into the Midnight Sun Ep 2
Air Date: 20 October 2019
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
A tiny hamlet in the Nordland county, Borg is home to Lofotr, a living museum of Viking times.
- Over 1000 years ago, Borg was home to a Viking village. Lofotr is the site of a reconstruction of one of the main buildings, as well as the visible remains within the archaeological excavation sites.
- This is a paid excursion, but is one you have to take to properly appreciate the Viking history and heritage. This is an interactive museum – so guests are not looking at things behind glass cabinets.
- The original structure was the longest Viking house ever, at 83 metres long and 9 metres high. The foundations of the old building are visible alongside the reconstruction, showing the size, where support pillars were located and where the rooms were divided.
- Artefacts, such as drinking glasses, were found onsite. The drinking glasses in the museum are dated to 700AD, and would have cost around 200-300 sheep back in the Iron Age.
- There are weavers and woodcarvers onsite, giving visitors the chance to see exactly how people lived.
- The name of the last village chieftain was found in a registry of the most important families who moved to Iceland.
- Guests to the Lofotr museum get to enjoy an authentic Viking lunch – a cauldron cooked bowl of lamb and barley soup.
